Holly Lawmaster – Casa Guadalupe

We were honored to have Holly Lawmaster from Casa Guadalupe speak at our November meeting.

Casa Guadalupe is a house of discernment for eight women on Valley Road in Clifton.  At Casa Guadalupe, these women live in community and share a life of prayer and service to others while discerning the will of God in their lives.  Holly and several of the young women joined us for Mass and the Rosary and, afterwards, shared stories of their life in community.

During her talk, Holly told the story of Juan Diego and Our Lady of Guadalupe.  She reminded us that the Blessed Mother always points to Jesus and is always interested in the small details of our lives!  It was an inspiring presentation and we all were moved by her talk and hope that she will join us again soon.

Social Tea Party

Our second Social Tea Party will be held on Sunday, May 6, 2012!  Click here for last year’s pictures!  Chef Todd will prepare an amazing luncheon of sandwiches and desserts.  We will have Tricky-Tray baskets and a 50/50 Raffle.  Next year we will have a prize for the best hat!

 OUR SECOND TELEPHONE ROSARY

Once again, in January 2012, the Rosary Society of St. Philip the Apostle gathered its members in prayer using the telephone!  Many of our members have difficulty getting out at night, especially in the winter.  The goal was to enable them to come together in prayer without needing to be physically present.  A conference call was pre-arranged and each member was sent an 800 number and instructions on how to call-in.

While the telephone Rosary will never replace actual meetings, it was a wonderful way to stay connected and enhance our devotion to the Blessed Mother.  I know that she was pleased with our efforts.

Flowers of Our Lady

Also at our April meeting, Francesca Anthony gave a presentation about an organization dedicated to the development of gardens honoring the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Gardening can be a prayerful work. A garden may be made edifying and instructive to children and adults. And now you, your family, and neighbors may honor Mary by prayerfully sowing, tending, harvesting and offering flowers and plants named for her in old popular tradition.

Mary’s Gardens was founded in 1951 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to research the hundreds of flowers named in medieval times as symbols of the life, mysteries and privileges of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Jesus–as recorded by botanists, folklorists and lexicographers; and to assist in the planting of “Mary Gardens” of “Flowers of Our Lady” today.  For more information, please paste this link into your browser:

Mission

St. Philip the Apostle Rosary Society is a spiritual organization whose primary focus is prayer and devotion to the Blessed Mother through the recitation of the Rosary and participation in Mass.

We welcome all women of the parish interested in deepening their faith in Jesus Christ through prayer and meditation on the Mysteries of the Rosary.  We usually meet once a month for Mass followed by the Rosary and Fellowship in the Auditorium.

For more information, please call Diane VanBlarcom at 973-594-0130 or email geminimom50@aol.com.

COMING IN APRIL

We are pleased to have Christine Flaherty of LifeNet as our guest speaker!  She will be speaking about the 40 Days for Life,, a campaign of prayer and fasting to end abortion.

See our Rosaran participation here!

Feast of Divine Mercy!

The Sunday after Easter is traditionally known as Divine Mercy Sunday.  At our March meeting, speakers Debbie Harley and Elaine Vigilante explained the origins of Divine Mercy through the life of St. Faustina and introduced a movie called “Divine Mercy in My Soul”.

The movie showed the inspiring story of St. Faustina’s call to religious life and her dedication to promoting the message of Divine Mercy.  St. Faustina was canonized a saint on October 5, 1996 by Pope John Paul II

SAVE THE DATE:  Wednesday, April 11th.  For the 4th year, St. Philip’s is participating in the Marian's Divine Mercy Novena featuring EWTN’s Father Benedict Groeschel as the guest speaker!

This will be Day 6 of the Novena, "Today bring to Me The Meek and Humble Souls and the Souls of Little Children".  Please tell your friends, relatives and fellow parishioners of this wonderful opportunity to hear Father Groeschel.  You won’t be disappointed!

A Saint of Our Own!

On February 18, the Rosarians hosted the DCCW and presented “A Saint of Our Own”, the story of Sister Miriam Teresa Demjanovich.  Our guest speakers were Sr. Marian Jose SC, Sr. Jane Teresa Culligan SC and Mary Mazzarella, MD who spoke about the journey towards Canonization.

Teresa Demjanovich, born in Bayonne, New Jersey in 1901, was the youngest of eleven children.  She received Baptism, Confirmation and her First Holy Communion in the Byzantine Ruthenian rite of her parents.

Teresa became a Sister of Charity in 1925 and died shortly after in 1927 at 26 years of age.  Because of her saintly life, the Sisters of Charity petitioned Rome for permission to open her Cause for Beatification.

Rosarians Bring Christmas Warmth to Youth Haven

Each year, the Rosarians support a charitable cause at Christmas.

This year, with the very generous donations we received, we were able to purchase and donate bathrobes, pajama bottoms, tee-shirts, alarm clocks and shower caddies filled with bath items to 20 teenagers living at Project Youth Haven.

Rosarian Marlene Holzli, who currently works at the Father English Center put us in touch with Maria Malave or Mrs. Claus as she is fondly called!

Project Youth Haven was founded to provide short-term, emergency residential services to youths in crisis.  They currently offer counseling services for runaway, homeless and abused youth, ages 11 to 17 and their families.  In November, Paul Doviak, Chris Scott and Beth Crocker visited the Father English Center in Paterson on behalf of the Rosary Society.

In addition to seeing first-hand many of the pre-school and family programs run by the Father English Center, Maria Malave gave them a tour of one of the group homes. They were moved by the plight of the young women and reported the information at the November meeting.

Candlelight Family Rosary

The month of October is dedicated to the Holy Rosary.  In order to celebrate this practice of honoring our Blessed Mother, the Rosary Society together with the school families of St. Philip’s hosted a Candlelight Family Rosary on October 15, 2011.

The Rosary was held outside the Church in front of the Bell Tower after the 5:30 Mass amidst horn-honking and traffic noise.  During the service, each family was asked to hold a bead of a giant rosary and offer a prayer for their families or other special intention. Led by Msgr. Kevin Flanagan, the rosary was attended by over 100 people.

Families were also invited to bring a jack-o-lantern with a religious image that they brought with them to the church.  The pumpkins were all different shapes and sizes and were carved with religious themes.  Some of the symbols included a cross, the face of Jesus and Noah’s Ark. All the pumpkins were lit and displayed during the rosary, enhancing the prayerful atmosphere of the evening.
